Nikolaihof, the oldest wine estate in Austria, and perhaps even Central Europe, has a history dating back 2,000 years to Roman times.
Today, Nikolaihof's production history under its current owners traces back to 1894 when the Saahs family brought the Wachau property. But to truly understand Nikolaihof, one needs to go back to 1971, when Christine Saahs discovered Biodynamics after being given a book written on the topic by Rudof Steiner. Fascinated, she began applying its precepts to all aspects of her life and her wine estate, making Nikolaihof the world's first Demeter-certified Biodynamic wine grower in 1998.
Tasting Notes: Greenish yellow in colour, this is a remarkably buoyant and poised wine. On the nose, you can find peppery notes, lentil, rhubarb, lemon, white peach, plum distillate, and tobacco wreathed in flowers and smoke, underlain by savoury, saline, scallop-like suggestions. On the palate, the wine presents a remarkable mineral structure. A wine possessing both lightness and profundity of flavour.
Wine Pairing: Pork, poultry, bacon, cooked fish, noodles, hard cheese.
